With an increasing amount of programmes out there like Dragon’s Den, has the image of the entrepreneur been diluted? Dragon’s Den, The Apprentice – they’re both shows that have put the entrepreneur into the public focus. But are they also cheapening the brand, so to speak? Maybe so – let’s face it, the reality of bringing a business to market is no where near as simple as standing in front of a few people sat with money stacks next to them and just pitching. Could you imagine if it was? That would make things a whole lot easier… Becoming a strong business person is also not a case of being generally rubbish at a few random tasks and spending most of your time arguing with other so called ‘entrepreneurs’ to win a job. In fact, some of the participants on The Apprentice have been so bad, it makes you wonder if there may be some of kind of offence committed by the BBC in having the nerve to call them ‘business people’. There have been some success stories to come out of these shows – Peter Jones got to be in a couple of BT adverts and Karen Brady got lots of promotion for her Sun column. I’m just having a laugh, there have been a couple of successes from the shows – although not really with The Apprentice. But I come back to the point, none of these shows demonstrates the true reality of what it is to go into the world of business and take on people that are ready to put you into the financial abyss to make sure they succeed themselves. So let’s take these kind of shows for what they really are – mainstream entertainment, with the smallest of glimpses into the world we know. Good quality viewing nevertheless…what do you think of these new breed of business and entrepreneur focused shows? Let us know, but in the meantime, watch our friend Peter Jones starring with some Gremlins in his very own BT advert…
