Don’t get me wrong. I love technology, the ease it affords us to do things better, the way it allows us to watch any film we want anytime and mostly the way it connects us to our communities. But when someone gave me a Blackberry Playbook recently I had to stifle a little groan. Another bit of kit, do I need it really….
I thanked the gift giver and promptly put it in my handbag with a view to using it later when I got home. And there was the first revelation, I actually had a tablet that I could put in my handbag and carry around with me.
Most women will appreciate how annoying it is when laptops don’t fit into handbags. So to have it fit was amazing. And it looks good too. It has a solid feel in your hand and the touch screen is very responsive and intuitive.
I am always wary about children and technology. Firstly, I am a bit old school and prefer my kids to be enjoying the great outdoors, and secondly I am always worried about sticky fingers messing up the gadget.
But let’s face it, there are some situations when a bit of technology helps defuse a situation. Say a long journey for example. And last week on a long train journey to visit a friend with my five year old I found myself plucking at straws. I’d exhausted my repertoire of Eye Spy and colouring in books and found myself scrambling in my handbag for an answer to my daughters ennui.
And thankfully my hand alighted on the playbook. Bingo, what is a play book for if not to play with. And ten seconds later my daughter was happily focused on playing with the Scrapbook. Mixing up photos and wallpapers, and generally creating a collage.
Has it changed my life? Yes, suffice to say I am now addicted to my Playbook, not only do I bring it with me to my meetings and use for my presentations but it also doubles up as my private cinema, film addict that I am.
We’ve come a long way since the early days of the internet and with the digital revolution in full swing it seems like email may soon be a relic of the past. So don’t ditch your notebooks just yet, while it’s fun to have beautiful gadgets, there are some times when good old fashioned pen and paper will only do.
Now, where did I put my to do list!
