When was the last thing you learned anything from your boss? If the answer is not for a long time then consider jumping ship for your boss just might not be up to the job. Great bosses are important to the psyche of the workplace and without one in place you are all heading for the sick bay.
Think about it. The greatest and most successful businesses have inspirational leaders at their helm. And these bosses are successful because not only do they care passionately about their business and understand the importance of engaging with their workforce but they follow through with their actions.
So, my top 5 tips for remarkable leaders:
1. Walk the floor: make it your goal to know everyone’s name. Sure it might be a mammoth task, but one that will pay dividends in the long run because it shows you care – and there’s nothing like a warm glow to inspire loyalty.
2. Be accessible: Have an open door policy will ensure that your employees will feel listened to. Not only that but its often a good way to hear the news that your middle managers often edit out
3. Help the interns and new starters: I never forget the boss who asked me into his office after nerves got the better of me on the podium. His kind words of reassurance stay with me now and helped develop my self confidence and self belief.
4. Be as honest as you can: telling it straight is often the most difficult thing to do. But honesty goes a long way and will ensure that you are respected.
5. Celebrate success: Reward your teams with praise when a job has been done well and you will increase efficiency . Forget to do this and you run the risk of an apathetic workforce.
And if you feel that your boss is out of touch why not try stepping in his or her shoes and suggest a job swap for the day. I’ve worked in a few places where the boss has swapped places with frontline workers. It’s a win win. The boss gets kudos because they’ve shown they can get their hands dirty and the frontline employee gets a taste of life in the hotseat. Why not try it out, you just might learn something new.
